# How to Run a DUPR Pickleball League at Your Club

How to run a DUPR pickleball league — choosing a format, setting rating bands, getting every player linked, and sending verified results to DUPR without typing them in by hand.

A **DUPR pickleball league** is a club league whose matches are reported to DUPR, so every game your players play on league night moves their rating. Players increasingly expect it: a league that "counts" fills faster than one that does not.

Running one well comes down to four decisions and one piece of plumbing. The decisions are the format, the rating band for each division, how scores get confirmed, and what to do about players who are not on DUPR yet. The plumbing is getting verified results from your league into DUPR without anyone retyping them.

This guide covers both, for organisers who have never run a DUPR league as well as those who have and want to stop doing it by hand.

## What DUPR is, in one paragraph

DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) gives every player two ratings, singles and doubles, on a scale from 2.000 to 8.000. The ratings are calculated from match results, not self-assessment, so a rating only means something if real matches are fed into it. A club becomes a source of those matches by registering as a club on DUPR, with at least one person holding a director or organiser role. From then on, matches the club submits count toward its players' ratings.

## Why DUPR leagues turn into admin work

The rating is DUPR's job. Everything around it falls on the organiser:

- **Collecting scores.** Players text them, write them on a whiteboard, or forget. Somebody has to chase the missing ones.
- **Entering them into DUPR.** Every match, with the right four players in the right pairs and every game score, typed into a second system after the league night is over.
- **Players who are not on DUPR.** A match where one of four players has no DUPR account cannot be submitted. If you only find out at the end of the season, those matches are lost.
- **Players outside the division.** A 4.2 who signs up for the 3.0–3.5 division is bad for everybody else. Checking ratings by hand at sign-up rarely survives the first busy week.
- **Corrections.** A score entered wrong in your spreadsheet is now wrong on DUPR too, and fixing it means remembering to fix it in both places.

None of this is hard. It is just repetitive, and it lands on one volunteer every week.

## How clubs usually handle it

Most clubs start with a spreadsheet for standings, a group chat for scores, and the organiser entering the results into DUPR by hand. It works for a single division of eight players. It strains at two or three divisions, and it breaks at the point where the organiser goes on holiday.

The usual workaround is to submit results in batches at the end of each month or at the end of the season. That saves the organiser time, but players do not see their rating move during the season. For many of them, that was the reason to join.

## How to set up a DUPR league

### 1\. Pick the format before the rating band

The format decides how many matches each player gets and whether partners stay fixed. Both affect how useful the results are to DUPR.

Format

How it plays

Best for

**Round robin in groups**

Everyone in a group plays everyone else; groups are ranked top to bottom, so the top of a group can move up and the bottom move down

A classic season league with fixed doubles teams or singles, and clubs with a wide spread of levels

**ELO standings**

One open table ranked by results rather than fixed fixtures

Flexible play where people arrange their own matches

**Americano**

Partners rotate every round; players score individually by points won

Social league nights where people want to meet new partners

**Mexicano**

Like Americano, but each round is paired from the current standings

Social nights where you want closer games as the evening goes on

Rotating-partner formats (Americano, Mexicano) still produce ordinary doubles matches: two players on each side, a real score. DUPR treats them as doubles results like any other.

### 2\. Set a rating band per division, and decide about unrated players

Divisions by DUPR rating replace the organiser's judgement call with a number everybody can see. Decide three things up front:

- **The range.** A lowest and a highest rating for each division, e.g. 3.000–3.499 and 3.500–3.999. Keep bands about half a point wide for competitive play.
- **Which rating counts.** Use the doubles rating for doubles and rotating-partner formats, and the singles rating for singles.
- **Unrated players.** Someone new to DUPR has no rating yet. A sensible default is to let them into a division with only a ceiling, such as an entry-level division, but not into one with a floor. They cannot prove they belong above it.

### 3\. Require a linked DUPR account at sign-up, not at season's end

A match is only submittable if every player on court has a DUPR account. So check at the point of entry. Before anyone pays, they should either be linked or be told exactly how to link. This is the single change that saves the most lost results.

### 4\. Make both sides confirm every score

Have one side enter the score and the other side confirm it. Then the number sent to DUPR has been agreed by four people rather than reported by one. If the losing side disputes it, nothing is submitted until it is sorted out.

### 5\. Fix the scoring format and say it in the rules

For a standard league match: best of three games to 11, win by 2. Whatever you choose, write it in the league description. DUPR needs a winner in every game, so tied games are not a valid result.

## Example: a hypothetical two-division doubles league

_Illustrative numbers, not a real club._

A club with 4 courts runs a six-week doubles league on Tuesday evenings:

- **Division A**, DUPR doubles 3.500–3.999: 6 fixed teams (12 players)
- **Division B**, DUPR doubles 3.000–3.499, open to unrated players: 6 fixed teams (12 players)

Each division is a single round robin. With 6 teams, that is 15 matches per division, played as 5 rounds of 3 matches, one round per week. Week 6 is a catch-up night for postponed matches.

Each Tuesday, the two divisions play 6 matches between them on 4 courts. That fits into two time slots of about 45 minutes for best-of-three games to 11.

Over the season, that is **30 matches and 120 player results** to submit to DUPR. Entered by hand, it is half an hour after every league night, plus chasing whoever has not linked their account. Done automatically, nobody touches it: each match is sent the moment both sides confirm the score.

## How SportyPlus handles DUPR leagues

SportyPlus connects the club, its members and each competition to DUPR, so the steps above become settings rather than chores.

**The club connects once.** Under _Business → Integrations → DUPR_, a club admin logs in to DUPR and chooses which DUPR club to associate. The list shows the DUPR clubs where that admin is a director or organiser. There are no API keys to request or paste in. The same page has a switch to show DUPR ratings on the club's rankings page.

**Members link their own accounts.** In the member app, under _Connected accounts_, players link DUPR through DUPR's own login, not by typing an ID that might be wrong. Their singles and doubles ratings appear straight away. They are refreshed every day, and whenever DUPR tells us a rating has changed. Members can also simply _sign in with DUPR_.

_Connected accounts in the member app: DUPR sits beside the other sign-in services, with Connect and Disconnect on the same row._

**Each league or tournament opts in.** In the competition's settings, a pickleball league or [tournament](https://www.sporty.plus/modules/tournaments) can be marked _Linked to DUPR_, with an optional _Lowest DUPR rating_, _Highest DUPR rating_ and _Requires DUPR+_. From then on, the rules are enforced at every way onto the roster: joining, being added by an admin, pairing up, and adding a partner. For a paid entry, the check runs before payment. A player without a linked account is sent straight to _Connected accounts_. A player outside the band is told their rating and the division's range. On the sign-up list, organisers see each player's DUPR rating, _NR_ for anyone unrated, and red for anyone outside the range.

**Results go to DUPR on their own.** A player enters the score in the app and the other side confirms or disputes it. The moment a result is confirmed, it is sent to DUPR as a league or tournament match. It carries the competition's name as the event and the group or round as the bracket. If a confirmed result is later corrected, the correction goes to DUPR. If it is deleted, it is removed from DUPR as well. A match where somebody has not linked their account yet is not lost: it is retried daily for 30 days and goes through as soon as the last player links.

**Only competition matches count.** Casual court bookings and friendly games are never sent to DUPR. A rating should not move because two friends played a practice set.

All of this sits on top of the ordinary [league module](https://www.sporty.plus/modules/leagues): round robin groups with promotion and relegation, ELO standings, Americano and Mexicano, singles or doubles, entry fees and waiting lists. League schedules can also book their courts automatically, so league night does not clash with [regular court bookings](https://www.sporty.plus/blog/court-booking-management). When a club turns off its own ratings and keeps DUPR on, the app's [rankings](https://www.sporty.plus/modules/rankings) become a DUPR ranking with a singles/doubles toggle.

## Practical recommendations

- **Register your club on DUPR before you announce the league.** Give at least two people the director or organiser role, so the integration does not depend on one person.
- **Publish the rating bands with the sign-up link.** Players who can see the band before they try to join do not need an email explaining why they were refused.
- **Tell players to link DUPR the week before sign-up opens.** A short post with a screenshot of the _Connected accounts_ page does more than a paragraph in the rules. Our guide to [posting on social media for your club](https://www.sporty.plus/blog/social-media-for-sports-clubs) covers getting it everywhere at once.
- **Keep an unrated-friendly division.** If every division has a rating floor, new players have nowhere to start and the league stops growing.
- **Write the scoring format into the league description.** Best of three to 11, win by 2, unless you have a reason to do otherwise.
- **Leave confirmation to the players.** Step in only when a score is disputed. That is the whole point of having both sides confirm.

## Related questions

**Do all four players need a DUPR account?** Yes. DUPR only accepts a match when every player in it is on DUPR. That is why the account check belongs at sign-up, not after the match.

**What happens if a player links their DUPR account halfway through the season?** In SportyPlus, their earlier confirmed matches are not lost. Matches waiting on an unlinked player are retried daily for 30 days and go through once everyone is linked.

**Can we correct a result after it has gone to DUPR?** Yes. Correcting a confirmed result in SportyPlus updates it on DUPR, and deleting it removes it from DUPR, which also reverses the rating change it caused.

**Do social Americano and Mexicano nights count on DUPR?** They can. If the competition is linked to DUPR, each match is a normal doubles result and is submitted like any other. If you want a night that does not count, leave the competition unlinked.

**Does SportyPlus support rally scoring for DUPR results?** Not yet. League matches are reported to DUPR as traditional side-out scoring. If your league plays rally scoring, talk to us before linking it.

**Can we use DUPR ratings without submitting results?** Yes. The club's DUPR connection can show members' ratings in rankings and player lists on its own. Each competition is linked to DUPR separately, only if you choose.

A DUPR league should cost the organiser a sign-up page and a set of rules, not a weekly evening of data entry.
